TOO HOT! Kingston Gallery Juried Show

JULY 3RD - AUGUST 11TH, 2024

OPENING RECEPTION: July 5, 2024

5:00-8:00 pm

A world on fire. The heat of passion. Feverish. Hot topics. Who’s hot, who’s not. Overheated rhetoric. Tik Tok trends. Hot wars, not cold ones. Too hot to handle.

This summer of 2024 will be too hot, but it’s not just the climate. Our culture is characterized by heat. 2023 was the hottest year in the past 125,000 years. 2024 looks to be no different. Wildfires raged on every continent; we live in a polarized society. Political rhetoric is overheated, wars are hot and getting hotter, consumerism remains a driving force.

Our world faces a cacophony of issues that are Too Hot to handle, including materialism, economic inequality, climate change, racism, immigration, reproductive freedom, and gender norms. We are living through threats to democracy, rising authoritarianism, a never-ending pandemic, social isolation, and grief. What is the new normal?

Over the centuries artists have described both the suffering and the beauty of their worlds, depicted and defined issues that were too hot to touch, or used their art as an antidote, to offer connection and healing, or provide respite from the fires raging around them. This moment is no different.

We are interested in how artists respond to the phrase TOO HOT!, in every definition of the words. Kingston Gallery is seeking artists who are actively creating work around these heated topics, or in response to the overheated intensity.

Juror: Jessica Roscio, Museum Director and Curator, Danforth Art Museum, Framingham, MA  Jessica joined the Danforth Art Museum in 2011, was appointed Curator in 2015, and Director in 2020. She specializes in exhibitions of contemporary, regional artists, working in all media.  Prior to the Danforth, Jessica held positions at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She is a regular contributor to Aspect Initiative, an online gallery focusing on contemporary photography in New England. Jessica has an MA in Art History from the University at Buffalo and a Ph.D. in American Studies, with a focus on the History of Photography, from Boston University.

Ego & Insecurities - Solo Show

AUGUST 23RD - SEPTEMBER 8th

OPEN RECEPTION: FRIDAY AUGUST 23RD, 2024

6:00PM - 8:00PM

I am so happy to announce that I’ll be having my first major solo show titled, Ego & Insecurities, at the Piano Craft Gallery. This exhibition is an intimate journey into the depths of the human psyche. By confronting and embracing the internal battle we all experience, this exhibition serves as a catalyst for personal growth and comfort with one’s identity, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of our shared human experience.

I’m truly ecstatic about the opportunity to tell my story in this exhibition and you all are absolutely invited! The opening reception is on Friday, August 23rd from 6pm - 8pm and the show will run to September 8th.

This show is a huge undertaking for me and I will need some help to bring it all together. In preparation for the show, I am putting together a Kickstarter campaign to help me cover the cost of materials, printing, and planning, and I would love your support. There will be some great rewards included that I hope y’all will enjoy! The campaign will be launching in the next month or so, but here’s a sneak peek of some of the rewards that will be available.

Providence Art Club - The Edward Mitchell Bannister National Exhibition: Celebrating BIPOC Artist

Curated by Independent Curator and Gallerist Krista Scenna
On view June 18 - July 14
Opening Reception: Sunday, June 18 from 2-4pm

Each year, the Providence Art Club welcomes artists from across the country to submit work for an open exhibition. In 2023, the Art Club is hosting a series of exhibitions and programs to celebrate founding member Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828-1901) in the lead up to the unveiling of a public sculpture in his honor in the fall of 2023.

Bannister was one of the most successful African American artists of his generation and one of the most influential individuals in the Art Club’s founding in 1880. The recipient of a top award in the 1876 Philadelphia Exposition, Bannister was a foundational force in the establishment of the Art Club. A talented painter in the Tonalist mode, Bannister was also a respected art critic and, along with his wife Christiana, a beloved member of the Providence community. This year’s Providence Art Club National Exhibition is dedicated to Bannister and will celebrate the best in contemporary art by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) makers from throughout the United States working in any theme, style, or media.

Founded in 1880, the Providence Art Club is one of the oldest arts organizations in the nation and the first such Club to be co-founded by women and men. Recognized as one of the top three galleries in Rhode Island by the Providence Journal, the Art Club received a coveted Best of Rhode Island Award for Best Art Gallery in Providence for the last four years consecutively. Entering its 143rd year, the Club looks forward to sharing the best in current visual arts by BIPOC artists from throughout the country with its unique audience in the Northeast.

Wednesdays 12 - 5 pm
Thursdays 3 - 8 pm

Curator’s Statement
This far-reaching exhibition–curated from the ECoCA 2023 Open Call by nico wheadon of the bldg fund - explores the concept of embodied knowing, or that knowledge both resides in and can be conducted through the body. With a focus on art’s role in documenting complex processes of embodied knowing, the show celebrates the power of individual insights to deliver us to mass liberation. The fifty artists featured in Embodied Knowledge each uniquely consider: how ritual, performance and labor cultivate a deeper sense of self in relation to society; how radical intimacy subverts prescribed social roles and formations, welcoming more instinctual ways of knowing; and how direct observation and introspection catalyze the transfer of wisdom across time, space, and constructed borders.

UPDATE 06/06/23:

After the newly surfaced internal turmoil within the organization that led to the withdrawal of the original curator, I have decided to also withdraw myself and my piece, Shared Presence, from the Embodied Knowledge exhibition. Regrettably, this means I will no longer be at the opening reception for the exhibition. While it was a difficult choice to make, it was the only choice that truly aligned with my morals.

Thank you so much for your understanding and continued support.
