Momma We Made It!

It was such a surreal accomplishment to be one of 40 artists selected from 400+ submissions to be on display in African American Museum of Dallas! The 27th Carroll Harris Simms National Juried Black Art Competition and Exhibition opening reception was an experience for the books. Having the opportunity to be showcased in such a space filled with beautiful Black art is truly a breathtaking experience.

DON’T TOUCH MY CROWN

I want to take a moment to talk about the piece that was invited to the museum. The piece titled “Don’t Touch My Crown” is a digital mix media collage that depicts a photo of myself expressing raw emotion when my crown is being tampered with. For me this was a very intimate piece that allowed me to pour all of myself into. It was during a trying time when my person, intellect, and talent were consistently being questioned. So for this piece to be accepted in an African American Museum makes it that much sweeter as it represents a moment of self-value and self-worth.

THE SUPPORT

I also wanted to show appreciation for the friends and family that have always believed in me and my talents. Two people in particular kept me level-headed during this insane occasion, Ali and David. Ali has been my rock for everything so my successes will always been shared with her. During premieres she has always reminded me that I’ve already done the work, all I have to do is show up. My friend David is a true believer in my art. He will swear up and down that “This is gonna be the one!” when I express complete doubt in it. He continuously reminds to never stop or give up.

“You’ve already done the work, all you have to do is show up.”

THE EVENT

I’m so happy I got to see so many of these talented artists as well as their masterpieces in person. When I started my career as an artist last September, I would have never imagined seeing my art featured in a museum along side artists I’ve admired from afar. So a few shoutouts to @onefishstudio , @austenbrantley , @hueydynamite , @yangyvisuals , @manasseh_art & @6th.kl for winning their respective categories. And a huge congratulations to @onefishstudio for winning the best in show!
